Winchester Wrestlers Bring Home Silver at the 2026 Bay State Games
The high school wrestling season is a winter sport. This past weekend, three members of the Winchester Wrestling family drove out to the Bay State Games, one of the most competitive events in New England, and more than held their own against the top wrestlers in the region.
Leo Gannon led the way. He fought through a deep bracket at 138 pounds and came away with a second place finish and a silver medal. A result like that, against a field that strong, says everything about the work he puts in year round. Ian Welsh drew a tough bracket of his own, picked up a hard-earned win, and gained the kind of experience against top competition that pays off when the high school season comes back around this winter. And Coach Tomi Uyehara showed his wrestlers exactly what he asks of them, stepping onto the mat himself in the adult division and earning a silver medal.
Testing yourself against the best in New England when the season is still months away is how good wrestlers become great ones. Congratulations to Leo and Tomi on their medals, to Ian on a gutsy showing, and to all three for representing Winchester the right way.
